Psychology Tutorials: Degree AS A2 GCSE

AS, A2 & GCSE Psychology:  £25ph
SPSS, Biological Science Stats:  £35ph
Proof reading:  £35 ph

call 07970 126670 or email gill.hebb@btopenworld.com

I offer one-to one psychology tutorial support to students at AS, A2, GCSE & degree level since 1999. These tutorials are usually in addition to the timetabled lessons that individuals take, either as crash revision courses, or as on going weekly support to ensure that course work is completed, or that students are learning all the materials necessary, to a standard that they will pass, with the grade they want.

All levels of Psychology courses usually involve carrying out research projects. It is not unusual for students to find they wish to have personal tutorial support for this. Some want to know if the report is in the right format; others need help design the experiment; many need help with the data processing and statistics involved.

PLEASE NOTE I DO NOT DO YOUR PROJECT, ANALYSIS OR WRITE UP FOR YOU.

SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientists) is commonly used for social science or health research, and Gill has extensive experience of teaching this software and statistics (parametric and non-parametric, Anova, Regression, Factorial Analysis etc).

Often instead of tutorials, students ask for their research projects to be proof read. At A level, Degree level dissertations and Post graduate theses it can be reasuring to know that someone who has not been involved in the work can read and understand the assignment.

What is Transactional Analysis?

TA is an approach to psychotherapy. Transactional analysis defines the basic unit of social exchange as a "transaction." There are three "ego states" from which transactions emanate-that of a "Parent", an "Adult", or a "Child."

The transactions between individuals can be classified as complementary, crossed or ulterior, based where within the communicator they originate, and where within the listener they are intended to make contact.

The transactional analysis framework has become a popular means of helping people to assess the nature and effectiveness of their interpersonal behavior. By striving for more adult-to-adult transactions, leaving it so that 'I'm OK & You're OK.  People can eliminate many of the "games people play."

Gill Hebb trained at the Metanoia Institute (http://www.metanoia.ac.uk/) and the Leeds Psychotherapy Training Institute (www.lpti.org.uk/).  I've completed the required training in order to proceed to take her CTA (CERTIFIED TRANSACTIONAL ANALYST) examination in the next 18 months; until them she refers to herself as a "Trainee Transactional Analyst with Psychotherapy speciality".

Gill uses Transactional Analysis (TA) in all areas of her work; psychotherapy, psychology, working in the field of dyslexia; teaching, training & development, etc.

Areas of need I deal with

Psychotherapy: What is it?

The words 'Counselling' and 'Psychotherapy' are often used interchangeably and overlap in a number of ways.  Professionals trained in this area will agree that Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Clinical Psychologists are people who are trained:
  • to listen to people and give them advice about their problems
  • to provide treatment of emotional or psychological distress by discussing with the sufferer the problems which caused the distress, instead of using drugs
Counselling, in specific situations, is offered as part of the psychotherapy process; whereas a counsellor may work with clients in a psychotherapeutic manner.

It is much more useful if you think about whether the information you have about the professional tells you if this is someone you want to work with or not.  This may mean meeting the professional first, to interview them and find out if you will be able to work with them, which is why several professionals offer a reduced price consultation session.

I work with teenagers, couples, men, women, any age in Leeds, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Trainee Transactional Analyst with Psychotherapy speciality

On this website, counsellor, therapist, psychologist, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist and various other terms are used interchangeably.

Counselling and Psychotherapy describe a talking therapy used to treat many personal difficulties such as depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and generally coming to terms with difficult situations and changes in your life.

Psychotherapy or counselling involve talking to a licensed professional during a scheduled series of weekly appointments. Psychotherapy can be offered for a six sessions initially, in order to find out what the key issues are. Then if you want to carry on, the therapist will make a contract with you to work on the things you wish to change or solve. For some people this takes 6 months, but can in some cases take many years.

Sometimes people have not dealt with a past trauma, and this now means that their mental health is reduced, because they are trying to keep the experience in the past and the attached emotions locked away.  Often the seal on the lock of avoided feelings starts to decay, and leak so that it needs to be handle, to avoid past feelings interfering with how you operate today.

Sometimes people are lucky enough to realise that they need to get help when the emotions first occur.  I offer teenagers, youths and young adults help, and make sure that you can make sense of the help that is on offer.

But sometimes people wait till they are at a later time in their lives when they have more resources available to be able to cope with the difficulties.  It is not always clear why people wait to get help; maybe they did not have enough resillience to face up to a person, situation or a mishap. It might be that as a young teenager, you are not able to deal with it, and you wait till you are married, or middle aged before you feel able to resolve the problem from the past.  If these past difficulties start to affect your marriage, relationships with your family,  or other people around you, you might want to make an appointment.

I work with teenagers, couples, men, women, any age in Leeds, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Dyslexia: Tutorial Support

Individual Sessions:  £35 per hour
Fees for Disability Support Allowance:  £65 per hour
07970 126670

Tutorial support for students with dyslexia involves helping to focus study skills on the tasks that the dyslexic student struggles with. It does not involve the tutor doing the work for the student.

In some cases, people who are dyslexic find it hard to think about, for instance, how to tackle an assignment or an essay without someone to talk the assignment through with. As a dyslexia tutor, I help you to talk through the assignment, asking probing questions about what your thoughts and opinions are about the assignment.

Further, someone who is dyslexic may find it hard to be able to write down their own thoughts on what the key components that the assignment requires of them. As a dyslexia tutor, I write down the words the student uses to capture the students thoughts and opinions are about the assignment.

Distractability is a key component of dyslexia, and I also employ some 'project management' skills to help keep you on track. On occasions, this may seem like you are being told to restrict your actions, but usually on reflection you become aware that the line of action you had been pursuing was not pertinant to completing the assignment.

For some with dyslexia, it is sometimes necessary to review your revision strategies, essay writing skills, or note taking and organisation of the hours your study. All of these things are comprehensively addressed by in Dyslexia Support Tutorials.

In this time of modern technology, it is possible to receive tutorial support to this end, using internet meeting rooms, and telephone, as well as face to face. I have worked with students in Tonbridge, Exeter, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Wales, Oxford with great success.

Dyslexia: Get diagnosed

Psychological Assessments for all Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia etc).

call 07970 126670 or email gill.hebb@btopenworld.com

Diagnostic assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties, such as dyslexia is an in-depth (3-4 hour) assessment designed to identify the pattern of individual strengths and weaknesses. The resulting detailed report helps to understand how an individual learns and gives recommendations for support, such as exam accommodations, in the form of extra time, use of a computer or a scribe and tutorial support. The types of support can include funding from Local Education Authorities in the form of Disabled Student Allowance.  The assessments for children and adults take place in a private clinic room set in Roundhay, Leeds.

I am approved by the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Psychologist (Educational specialism) to assess for Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and related Specific Learning Difficulties.

£350 for a 3-4 hour Specific Learning Difficulties test.
